Aarvik gard lies right by the large and beautiful Bjørnefjorden. Here you can stay overnight in Gamlastovo from 1820 or in Oldemors Stove. On the farm there is an organic craft bakery and café in the barn, where we bake a great variety of sweet baked goods and sourdough bread made from ancient grains. We also grow vegetables, berries and fruit, and you can say hello to the coastal goats, mini pigs, peacocks, rabbits and hens. Aarvik gard is a living example of sustainable agriculture and a unique opportunity to experience the beautiful nature and coastal life by Bjørnefjorden. As guests at Aarvik gard you get to experience what it is like to be on a smallholding and live in harmony with nature. You can enjoy the calm and reconnect with yourselves by staying in a place where time passes slowly and nature surrounds you on all sides. Here you will sleep well on organic Sleep on Nature mattresses and wake to birdsong and the sound of the waves in Aarvika. And here you can enjoy good, organic food in the café with freshly baked sourdough bread and buns from our bakery. Our philosophy is to give back as much as we harvest from nature, and to recognise that we are part of nature and of nature's cycles and seasons. We believe it is important to look after and build up the soil and not exploit it, out of consideration for nature itself, but also for future generations. Here we grow food without ploughing the soil, and we look after biodiversity by not using pesticides or artificial fertiliser. On the farm we have a small flock of goats of the conservation-worthy Kystgeita (Norwegian coastal goat) which helps us to maintain the cultural landscape; in addition we have hens, peacocks, runner ducks, rabbits and mini pigs. In summer the smallholding is busy, as that is the high season for most things, both in the bakery and in the kitchen garden, and in addition it is important to dry and bring in grass so that the animals have winter fodder. You may be lucky enough to see us cutting grass with long- and short-handled scythes (scything) on our steep and typically West Norwegian slopes, and if you feel like it you are welcome to join in and help us with the haymaking, but it is entirely voluntary!
