About Klostergarden
Utstein® Gard covers around 1700 decares, of which 420 are cultivated land, plus leased land. Today around 1400 pigs for slaughter are produced annually, including 10-30 outdoor pigs, beef from 30 suckler cows and lamb from around 500 winter-fed sheep. The latter production results in about 800-1300 lambs a year, of which around 700 lambs are sold on the market. There are rich traditions of developing quality food at Utstein, and we promise you safe and good food built on generations of knowledge. Together with Stølen kjøttforedling, on 24 June 2026 we were proud to receive the Spesialitet (Norwegian speciality food label) mark for both fenalår (cured leg of lamb) and pinnekjøtt (salted, dried lamb ribs) from Utstein, awarded by Stiftelsen Norsk Mat. Utstein is a protected cultural environment. There is no public access to the farm, which consists of cultivated land, cultivated pasture and infield. Animals graze here all year round. Klostergarden receives groups of visitors by appointment, and also offers tailor-made activities and experiences. At klostergarden.no you can see some of the things you can experience at Utstein and Klostergarden. The guided tours start and end in the farm shop, which is located in an old sjøhus (quayside warehouse) just below Utstein Kloster. The sjøhus dates from about 1850 and has a very special atmosphere. The restoration of the sjøhus (2017) was supported by Kulturminnefondet, Riksantikvaren, Innovasjon Norge, Inge Steenslands Stiftelse, Rogaland fylkeskommune and the former Rennesøy kommune. The sjøhus was officially opened by the then Minister of Agriculture and Food Jon Georg Dale in 2018. In 2019 the sjøhus was nominated for the EU Mies Award – a European prize for contemporary architecture. Examples of things you can buy in the farm shop are spekemat (cured meats), sheepskin rugs, wool products, books, jigsaw puzzles, design products, art, as well as local food and drink. 80 % of the goods are bought from the food region we are part of and over 90 % from suppliers in Norway. Payment by card or Vipps (a Norwegian mobile payment app). Parking at the public car park on the farm. The view over the beautiful cultural landscape comes free of charge. Welcome to historic Utstein!
